My Thoughts About Paris

I've been thinking about some folks' statements that have kind of blasted people for paying so much attention to the tragedy in Paris and not remembering the tragedies elsewhere enacted by the Islamic State.

Although I understand their point, and certainly feel a terrible sadness for everything that is going on for so many people all over the world, I think it is actually quite reasonable that many in the West, especially the U.S., have responded the way they have. For a few reasons.

Firstly, France is our ally. For the U.S., they are our oldest ally. Are you not quicker to respond when an old friend or family is hurt than others? It's just the way it is. They are also a very important ally in this struggle, so it is of great concern. To us as well as all of Europe.

Which leads to another point. Striking France is very disturbing. It hurts far more people than just the French. I am also thinking of all those Refugees who are simply trying to get out of a horrible situation and find somewhere safe to live. They are the true victims in all this and now their situation will be made the worse for it. Because now, what will France decide to do? What will the rest of Europe decide to do? What will the U.S. decide to do?

The biggest thing to remember is that these are radical jihadists, not Muslims. I refuse to let my heart harden to the many good people who simply wish to live their life in peace alongside everyone else. I live in an area where there are many Muslims and they are always polite and kind. I try to be the same, as good neighbors always should be. May we all get through this as a stronger people, not a harder people. With more open hearts and arms.

Yes, I stand with France - but I stand with the World, too, and all those seeking true co-existence.
